Lead Upholsterer

Asheville Furniture Repair is looking for someone to join our team as Lead Upholsterer. If you’ve done the hard work to become a master of your trade, we hope you’ll consider this job.

We focus on repair and restoration of existing furniture, which results in us constantly working on a wide variety of projects. A typical week might include completely reupholstering an antique armchair, then re-stitching a seam in a leather sofa damaged by a moving company, then recovering a dozen bar stools for a restaurant.

That means you’ll need knowledge and experience with a wide variety of styles and construction methods, and the ability to problem solve and figure out what you don’t know how to do.

You’ll need to be comfortable with self-directed work and minimal day to day supervision.

Job Responsibilities:

Upholstery, obviously.

Work with our sales team to prepare estimates and invoices.

Meet with designers and clients to discuss construction details.

Advise owner on hiring. Train and supervise assistant upholsterers.

Coordinate with the woodworking department on jobs that use both trades.

Keep projects on schedule, source and order supplies. Assign work to assistants as appropriate.

Some details:

The successful candidate will have 10+ years of experience, and the skills to run an upholstery shop. This is not an entry level position.

You’ll be working in our shop in West Asheville, with tools and machinery provided. There might also be a certain amount of travel in the Asheville area – picking up and delivering pieces, and on-site work.

Position is full time. Hours are flexible, but your reliability must be rock-solid.

Pay rate is negotiable and competitive. We believe in paying wages that a human being can actually live on. We offer 401k and paid time off.

We have a solid commitment to diversity and keeping Asheville weird. All identities are welcome to apply.
